But if they turn away, then are they in schism,

And if ye fear a breech between them twain 
(the man and wife), appoint an arbiter from 
his folk and an arbiter from her folk.

And whoso opposeth the messenger after the guidance
(of Allah) hath been manifested unto him,
and followeth other than the believer's way,
We appoint for him that unto which he himself
hath turned, and expose him unto hell 
a hapless journey's end!

That is because they opposed Allah and His messenger.

Whoso opposeth Allah and His messenger,
(for him) lo! Allah is severe in punishment
