say

They say
....

who say: We believe in Allah and the Last 
Day, when they believe not.

Yet if a happy thing befalleth them 
they say: This is from Allah

and if an evil thing befalleth them they say: 
This is of thy doing (O Muhammad)

they say: We took precaution,

who say: Which one of you hath thus increased in faith?

they say: Why hath not a treasure been sent down for him

They speak naught but a lie.

they say: We hear and we obey.

because they say, We believe, and will 
not be tested with affliction

and if they speak thou givest ear unto their speech

they said: Our Lord is Allah

And if they were to see a fragment of the heaven 
falling, they would say: A heap of clouds.

And those who are of sound instruction say: We believe
therein; the whole is from our Lord; but only men of
understanding really heed

Those who say: Our Lord! Lo! we believe. So forgive
us our sins and guard us from the punishment of Fire!

They utter with their mouths a thing which is 
not in their hearts
1

and say: "We hear and disobey; hear thou as one 
who heareth not" and "Listen to us!" distorting 
with their tongues and slandering religion
1

and how they say of those (idolaters) who disbelieve:
"These are more rightly guided than those who believe?"
1

and of the feeble among men and of the women and 
the children who are crying: 
Our Lord! Bring us forth from out this town of 
which the people are oppressors!
1

Yet if a happy thing befalleth them they say: 
This is from Allah; and if an evil thing 
befalleth them they say: This is of thy 
doing (O Muhammad).
1

And they say: (It is) obedience; but when they have 
gone forth from thee a party of them spend the 
night in planning other than what thou sayest. 
Allah recordeth what they plan by night.
1

and seek to make distinction between Allah and
His messengers, and say: We believe in some and
disbelieve in others, and seek to choose a way
in between
1

and saying: If this be given unto you, receive it
but if this be not given unto you, then beware!
1

And thou seest those in whose heart is a disease
race toward them, saying: We fear lest a change
of fortune befall us
1

Then will the believers say (unto the people of the
Scripture): Are these they who swore by Allah their
most binding oaths that they were surely with you?
Their works have failed, and they have become the
losers
1

If they desist not from so saying a painful doom
will fall on those of them who disbelieve
1

They say: Our Lord, we believe. Inscribe us as
among the witnesses.
1

We know well how their talk grieveth thee,
though in truth they deny not thee (Muhammad)
but evil-doers flout the revelations of Allah.
1

They worship beside Allah that which neither
hurteth them nor profiteth them, and they
say: These are our intercessors with Allah
1

And they will say: If only a portent were sent
down upon him from his Lord! Then say
(O Muhammad): The Unseen belongeth to Allah.
So wait! Lo, I am waiting with you.
1

Or say they: He hath invented it?
1

And they say: When will this promise be fulfilled,
if ye are truthful?
